1939 Pontiac 'Ghost Car'
Note from Michigan
* Rectification: The 1939 Pontiac Ghost Car is still up for auction in Michigan by the end of this month.
This specially fabricated see-through vehicle was constructed of pioneering Plexiglas (a collaboration between GM and the company Rohm & Haas), which made visible the many parts that created the Deluxe Six edition. All screws and fasteners were chrome-plated for dramatic effect. It is said to have cost approximately $25,000 to build at that time.
The Pontiac Ghost Car was the highlight of the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair. Since the early 1980s it has been owned by a single-family and despite it’s long life, the clear-bodied car has only been driven 98 miles since its introduction.
It might appear spooky at first sight, hence the name Ghost Car, but on second thought the transparency gave me a feel of revelation. A true collector’s item.
